Experts estimate that kids ask an average of 25 questions an hour. Which explains why parents are exhausted at the end of the day. But also why being bombarded with questions by a child custody lawyer can be an overwhelming and frustrating experience.
At Matteucci Family Law, Bob and the rest of our team work to make sure that the meetings you have with us feel like a conversation, not an interrogation. But we do have to gather certain information that will allow Bob to evaluate your case, advise you of the options available to you under New Mexico’s child custody laws, and help you chart a path forward.
To that end, Bob will often ask you to share:
- Basic information about your kids like their names, ages, and activities they enjoy.
- A rundown of where you and your kid’s other parent will be living or lives post-split.
- What your kids’ home life looks like right now. How are parenting responsibilities currently split up? Is this working for your family?
- Your future plans and goals for yourself and your family
- What are your biggest concerns when you think about child custody?
- What would you consider an ideal custody arrangement?
- Would your or your child’s other parent be their primary caretaker?
- How often would the children travel between homes?
- Are there certain holidays you would expect the kids to spend with you and your family or with your ex and his or her family?
- Does your child have a strong relationship with you? Their other parent? Their extended family on either or both sides?
- What are your children’s preferences regarding custody, if they are old enough to express them?
- Do your children have any special needs or medical conditions? If so, how are those needs being met?
- If you or your children have been victims of domestic violence or fear you might be.
- Are there any existing court orders in place that may impact your child custody case?
Looking at this list should give you a general idea of what your conversations with Bob and his team will cover. But we don’t expect to be the only ones asking questions.
We understand that our initial meeting is a chance for you to evaluate us, as much as it is an opportunity for us to get a feel for your case. We expect you will have questions about the child custody process, Bob’s experience, and his opinion of your case. We are ready to have that conversation so we can start to build a positive working relationship with you.
