As a family law attorney, Bob Matteucci is typically pleased to fly under the radar. His clients, who are typically business owners, professionals, or other high-net-worth individuals, don’t want their personal business to make headlines, and Bob is happy to oblige.
But there’s an exception to every rule (as any good attorney knows!), and Matteucci is happy to share that his work as a special master was highlighted by Albuquerque Business First.
The go-to source for New Mexico business news noted, “Bob provides clients with a powerful combination of legal knowledge and business acumen…Having managed, operated, and owned a successful business, attorney Matteucci is keenly aware of the challenges small business owners face in a divorce.”
Serving as a Special Master in New Mexico Divorces
New Mexico family court judges are increasingly relying on special masters to help them move complex divorces through the system.
Under Rule 1-053 of New Mexico’s Rules of Civil Procedure for the District Courts, judges are authorized to appoint special masters to assist them or the parties to a case when the special master has a set of skills or certain knowledge that the parties’ attorneys or the judge overseeing the case believes will be helpful to tap into. They are hired as a neutral party that can assist a couple that is having a difficult time coming to an agreement, or investigate an issue the judge would like more information on before he or she issues a decision.
With his past business experience (he was the 4th generation of his family in the retail shoe business) and familiarity with tricky financial issue, Bob works as a special master in cases where it is necessary to sell, liquidate, value, assess, or divide marital property, including:
- Real property — Residential, commercial, agricultural, land, and vacation property
- Businesses — Manufacturing, merchandising, service, digital, and professional services
- Business assets — Inventory, receivables, and equipment
- Other assets — Vehicles, art, jewelry, firearms, and antiques
Matteucci has also served as a special master in a case where a divorcing couple owned a few businesses together and they were fighting about payroll, hiding money, etc. The court hired him to monitor the business to make sure nothing bad happened while the case wound its way through the family court system.
