How to Choose the Right Family Lawyer in New Mexico

By Bob Matteucci

As children, we were all told the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. In case you need a refresher, it’s the one where a young girl named Goldilocks breaks into the home of three bears, riffles through their belongings, then falls asleep in the littlest bear’s bed. When the bears return they either eat her, chase her off, or help her find her way home — depending on which version you are reading.

Kids love the story because they like the idea of exploring a bear family’s home, but they also identify with Goldilocks and her pursuit of things that are “just right.” Driven by their innate curiosity, children often encounter items that are too hot or cold, big or small, hard or soft, before stumbling upon something that is “just right.”

At some point we all lose our interest in Goldilocks. We might even give up looking for things that are “just right” and accept whatever comes our way. This approach may be fine for some things, but it is not the best way to choose an attorney to handle your divorce. Finding a New Mexico family law attorney who is “just right” for you is worth the effort.

Look for a Lawyer who Handles Cases Like Yours

There are hundreds of attorneys in the Albuquerque area, and scores of those do divorces. But that does not mean you should hire the first divorce attorney you stumble upon. This is particularly true if you have complex business assets that are part of your marital estate, or you want a mediated divorce or collaborative divorce.

If you aren’t sure where to start, reach out to friends and family members who have gotten divorced and see if they have a recommendation to share. Or talk to an attorney you have used for something else in the past — like buying a house or forming a business — and see if they can give you a referral.

Find an Attorney You Can Trust

Once you find an attorney that handles divorces like yours, make sure they are someone you feel comfortable working with.

You are putting you and your family’s future into the hands of the attorney you hire by empowering them to act on your behalf. If you have a gut feeling that the attorney you found is not someone you want to spend a lot of time around, or share the most intimate details of your life with, it is time to move on.

Don’t Settle for the First Option

Finally, don’t be afraid to act like Goldilocks and talk to a bunch of attorneys before settling on one that is just right. You should not hesitate to shop around until you find the attorney you are most comfortable working with.

Serving New Mexico Families with Dignity & Compassion

Goldilocks obviously makes some questionable life choices if she thinks breaking into a bear family’s home is a good idea, but one thing she does well is persistently search for things that fit her needs. She doesn’t settle.

People who are looking for a family law attorney to help them file for divorce should take a page out of Goldilocks’ book and keep looking until they find an Alburquerque area lawyer that is just right.
